These were colored threads. It looked like they were coming out of peoples' hearts? It only started after you started singing--evidently you used to be a performer before you came here.

...those 'ribbons' or threads are a person's life force, and the reason you could see them is because I could see them. Generally they're invisible to the naked eye.

I see. So your singing can do that kind of thing.

But you ended up in the hospital afterward. Actually taking that energy, it wasn't exactly your doing. That thing forced them inside you, and after that everything went wrong, like there was an infection. Is that--

[ she hesitates to call it a monster, remembering that he had asked it to stay at the end. ]

It, er, he's a demon. Mine, I guess. [ "mine", because he did summon him, but the demon doesn't necessarily belong to him. he just does at the moment... ]

And my singing isn't what did that. It was just kind of a... catalyst, I guess you could call it. But... no, I'm not the one that made everything go to shit. He got greedy and pulled too much of it, and in doing so it killed them and hurt me. If he would have just stuck to the plan, then nobody would have died.

What was "the plan?"

Just to siphon a little life from everybody.

Hmm. So the original idea was to take just a very small amount from a very, very large crowd of people so that the missing energy wouldn't even be noticable?

Exactly. If you take a little from a lot of people it's basically the same as taking a lot from a small bunch of people... except the effect on them isn't as bad. If you drain somebody of a ton of life, well, I'm sure you can imagine what happens... er, you... saw what happens... A little is barely noticeable! [ and probably not even missed!! ]

I thought that might be where this was going. Were you just not expecting it, or do you not have much control over that thing?

This isn't exactly something I bring up to just... anybody. Demons and demon summoning are kind of, like, taboo.

Well, you figured out how to do it in the first place, right? How did that happen?

I did a lot of research on the subject. Humans like occult stuff. Most of the time it's written off as fake, and some of it probably IS fake, ...but if you piece together enough of it, then you'll find the actual factual stuff.

So do you think if you did a lot more research you could find something that isn't fake to help you exorcise it?

I guess I'd first have to be interested in doing so, but [ shrugs. ] yeah, maybe.
