[it's a collection of Asian fairy tales, and the one he opened it initially to was the story of Yè Xiàn, specifically to the part where she befriends the 10-foot fish/guardian spirit sent by her dead mother. it's also a really pretty book: not illustrated, but the text is laid out prettily and the ink is really pretty.]
