Betrayal Session 17

What: Betrayal at the House on the Game Tower

[ The game starts with you in elevators, the doors jammed shut. You can keep an eye on the city further and further below you, but there's no introduction to today's game.

It's just as well. Those of you who recognize it need no introduction to it. Those of you who don't couldn't be prepared by any host's opening spiel, anyway.

The elevator stops atop the central tower of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building and then lurches unpleasantly, wrenching itself out of where elevators ought to go. The sudden movement jolts you, and when the doors open you spill out into a room.

Hopefully, with not too much time missing. ]

[ You enter the Chapel. Dazzling chandeliers hang from the high ceilings, the rows of pews draped with gold-embroidered cloth; the candle holders look as if they could go on the market for hundreds of dollars. Such decadence for a place of God.

At the front of the Chapel's hall there is an altar with wilted flowers on the corner of either side that crumble into fine dust if touched. A holy book sits in the center of the altar - it's hard to read, but there's something that can barely be read: "...God did not spare angels ... but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment…"

There is only one entrance, and consequently, one exit: to the west.

There's a confessional in here, in the far corner. Confess? Each character can do this once per round. (Confessing will clear your mind a little; gain one sanity if you do.) ]

You see an open coffin. You're inside it.

You must attempt a Sanity roll:
4+: You blink, and it's gone. Gain 1 Sanity.
2-3: The vision disturbs you. Lose 1 Sanity.
0-1: You're really in that coffin. Lose 1 Sanity and 1 Might as you dig yourself out. If the Graveyard or the Crypt has been found, the character is moved to one (player choice).

[ Tatsuya rolls a 5! Which means after a startled blink, his sanity's doing better than ever. ]

...Um. Okay, then.

[gonna perch in the pews and wait while these two get their prayers on.]

[Looking at Joker a bit indignant.]

You want me to pray. To God.

You've got to be fuckin' kidding me.

[Did he forget to mention he's been corrupted by Lilith to hate all things Heaven?]

[ Tatsuya looks at 99. Then at Joker. Then at 99 again.

And he cracks up laughing. ]

[yeah, this is fucking funny.]

Well, confess, actually.

Go on, Nine. Go let out all those feelings you keep locked down. Unload a little.

[Throwing up his hands.]

Oh, fuck off! The both of you.

[And leaving.]

[ Tatsuya's actually going to go into the confessional first. He sits down quietly and says a few things before leaving. ]

I'm done.

[Joker is busy taking a selfie of himself, sitting perched on the pews, covered in blood, with his physical corruptions, grinning and holding up a peace sign.

but once it's snapped, he's pocketing his phone again and hopping down from the pews.]

Cool. Let's go before Nine turns into dust by being too close to the holy or something.

Yeah...

[ And he does manage a smile this time. ]

Let's get going.

[ Tatsuya sits in the confessional and murmurs quietly, words between only himself and the collective unconsciousness. Unless some asshole of a unitmate eavesdrops, of course. ]

Confess my sins, huh? There's too many to count, numbered more than the stars. I've killed so many, hurt them... There is no forgiveness for me. I know that. I don't expect it.

...I lied to Jun, I think. I promised him I won't go back to our world. He says it's gone and I'll forget, but I know... what little I know is that I remembered when I wasn't supposed to. So I think I'll go back. It's my penance, a punishment for my sins.

I killed Joker, stabbed him in the back. Even if he forgives me for that later, I don't deserve that either. I know what I did, I know exactly the ways in which that hurts. And I did it anyway.

I'll sin again, though. I'm sorry for that too. But I'll sin as many times as it takes, until I can rescue Phoenix and Crow from where they are and end this entire wretched place.

...Don't forgive me. But hear my words, and my promise. That's all.

[ And he leaves the confessional. ]

[Man, he's not gonna approach him or anything, but damn Tatsuya.]

[ He has a lot on his mind. ]

[EMERGING FROM THE BASEMENT.]

I hate that we start so far from the stairs...

[but he looks relieved.]

So this is, ah, what is up here...

Yeah. I haven't been up to the second floor at all this time, but I've been south from here. There's a cemetery to the west, and east leads to the main hall.

[pause]

... for the record, Levi-san is mad at me because I intervened when Wednesday-san shot Nine. Never mind the fact that she's the one who killed him in the first place, and then after getting offended at me he killed her.

I, ah, overheard a little of your conversation and wondered what had occurred... [just. sighs.] ...so he, ah, cannot be counted on, especially if we run into her. His, ah, important people, over ours, even if they are possessed.

It seems -- I mean, at least to me -- less dangerous to us as unitmates than the other ghost, but it still makes things difficult.

Is there anyone you want to try to find? Or anything?

I am, ah, still going to assume that he will be dangerous to us and work accordingly. Whether through direct action or inaction on his part.

[shakes his head] ...It, ah, might be better if I do not seek anyone out. And I am not certain of the rooms here, since...I did not make it far last time.

[winces a little at that reminder.]

... yeah, um, the layout changed since last time too, so... some things seem more or less in the same place, but it's difficult to say for sure.

If Nine's here in this round, I'd like to find him, but I don't even know where to start looking.

I am, ah, not certain, either. He could, ah, be anywhere.

...though, ah, if possible we should avoid small places. Or, ah, places where people might congregate.

Ugh, yeah. Not going back to the hallway I was trapped in last time.

[... rubs his hands over his face, shoulders drooping.]

Maybe we should just stay here. Try to keep safe that way...
