[Cosmo is rocking a look. Minus the plague mask, it's just his normal mask. He's got a set of fruity drinks in front of him, and he's leaning back with a drink in hand.]

"Risk" and "Reward".

Half of these drinks are non-alcoholic, most of the rest are quite potently alcoholic, a few are drugged.

The risk is obvious, the reward is engaging in the live. Or perhaps in avoiding the traps.

The drugs are one of three kinds--a potent psychedelic, a numbing agent, and something to get you a little hot under the collar. Do take it elsewhere if you get that last one.

[He sips his drink.]

Of course some say the best way to win at gambling is not to play, but where's the fun in that?

Maybe next time drugs with other effects can be tested.

I have no desire to undo the efforts you've made with our reputation with blind drug trials.

The results might be interesting but I doubt they would be worth the hassle.

However, next time I'll ask your opinion on what drugs to use.

The psychedelic is also interesting, perhaps if we gave them some art materials, to see how they depict their own hallucinations. Honestly I couldn't think of anything to substitute or add... anything that would bolster aggression should be avoided... perhaps one that induces a feeling of euphoria?

These sound like excellent ideas. Would you stop at that?

I must admit I have a fondness for substances that eliminate the filter between mouth and mind, but that's for insurance purposes.

Do you have any favorites?

In others? As you say, whatever inhibits inhibitions. It is quite interesting to see people's natures unrestrained.

Where do you suppose the root of inhibitions lie? Is it within the person themselves? Is it society or culture?

Cultural, I believe. It is the values we are raised with, or even a rejection of those values, that shape how we believe we "should" act. Though of course in the case of rejection it could be argued that stems more from within than without.

I suppose that's why people who come here without memories lack some of those predispositions, though others are firmly ingrained.

That would be a plausible explanation. Nature versus nurture has always been a debate about personalities, but I do not think it is an either/or answer.

I suppose that's true. Even if individuals are exposed to the same external stimuli, they may grow or develop differently based on their inherent nature.

Exactly. Though it can be argued no two experiences can ever be exactly the same, some of that divergence is as much one's internal way of processing events as any subtle or substantial deviation in the intrinsic experience itself.

Mmm. It's interesting... at my previous job, there was a woman who had her son cloned. Even though they were treated differently, they shared a few proclivities.

How interesting. It is the soul that influences personality in my opinion, but genetics could play a previously unconsidered part. Or perhaps they had shared influences that were more subtle.

Can parts of a soul be copied or could it be intertwined with one's genetics?

The cloning was extremely experimental during my time period. The fact two humans were successfully born and survived to the age of 16 was scientific miracle.

The state of the body should not influence the soul, certainly not split it. But perhaps an imprint of the... aether or whatever it is that is your world's equivalent might have passed on? Or shared a link between them.

Perhaps. They were born many years apart and raised... very differently.

The clone was made for spare parts and testing experimental medicines to preserve the source's music career, but when they quit, the clone had no value. Their tastes are the same in some ways, but their personalities are completely different.
