There's value to be had in the intimacy of creating one's instrument with one's own hands!

But a purchased one will also do in a pinch. I've made quite the collection here -- after all, it's the life you bring to an instrument when you play it that truly matters, right?

I think there's extra life in music when it's made by something that grew naturally. Perhaps I get satisfaction from taming the wildness of it as well.
