The city itself is based on a giant city from my own world, so that's probably part of the reason.

Interesting. The things that could say about this place are probably too numerous to bother debating, but it's certainly not what I'd have guessed in a place that brings folks from every corner of every universe.

It's also mimicking the idol culture of earth, so they might've just stolen ideas left and right to make their own version.

Something like that. There's bands that get a lot of advertisement and merchandising on the basis that they're romantically available - for your fantasies, anyway.

Naturally. It's probably the most efficient forced bonding system I can think of, when you account for emotion-sharing and the like. [ Things have been thoroughly explained ]

Plus, your unit's the only people you can reliably - well, rely on. Even your loved ones on other units might have to make the choice to save you or another loved one on a different unit.

It's very dramatic, so of course the audience eats it up.

I think most units have their own way of settling the debate one way or another. It just depends on what people consider to be most "fair."
