That they're cold-hearted is rather obvious. The story about Job is obviously meant to be a parallel of our own plight. Creatures that are willing to random, innocent people into this for the purpose of resolving some internal... pissing contest... obviously already lack compassion.

They were some kinda black sheep devil child outcast, abused, hated, whatever. They prayed and prayed, but help never came, so they decided to give up on heaven and call a demon instead, using their tormentors as the price.

Of course, being a vengeful ghost and all, you can kinda guess it didn't work out so well for them. Their "victims" caught wind of what they were up to and offered them up as a human sacrifice first.
