[And he pulls out a rather fancy looking book, one that looks, at least on the outside, like it was designed in the style of some sort of magical tome.
(It's probably the second heaviest book in his bag...)]

Thanks. It's just like the tome I remember using, back home. ...Well, on the outside, at least. I wanted something at least a little bit familiar, so...

[In any case, he opens the book, flipping through until he comes to more recent pages, covered in his own handwriting - a neat, elegant script that looks like he was specifically taught at one point - as well as some attempts at copying some of those stick and circle diagrams for molecules that they teach in high school.
Apparently he was reading about cyanide (it's, it's fine), which veered toward how it works on a chemical level, since the first diagram is somewhat crude and obviously copied down by someone who's doing his best but not 100% sure what he's looking at. The notes then take a sharp nosedive into what that diagram even means, and there's a page or two of just excited notes about how molecules are made of atoms and more simple molecular structure diagrams that are clearly labeled.]
