It's okay. I haven't really... I mean, I've been kind of distant, too. I'm glad we're talking now, though. Were any of the books good?

Uh huh. Well, for the most part I've been continuing my usual research, but it really is fascinating.

Poisons. How to make antidotes, how to tell their symptoms apart... One of the books was describing... mm, I believe it called them their molecular structures? So I also found a book explaining those...

You're learning some chemistry? Poisons and antidotes does sound like a more interesting way to learn about that kind of stuff than science class.

Uh huh. To be honest, it's fascinating on its own merits as well. The theories and concepts feel completely unfamiliar to me, so it's unlikely any such research has ever been done in Grado. If the natural laws are consistent, I can only begin to imagine how it could revolutionize magic as we know it...

[...but then he catches himself and flushes a little]

Oh, um, well... Studying is all I've ever really been good at, so...

[He's doing that thing again, where he subconsciously starts trying to take up less space so that he feels less in the spotlight. Not because he's upset, though, but because praise is hard. ./////.]

It sounds like you're pretty good at thinking up ways to apply the things you learn, too.

Surely that's nothing that special... I'm just glad if, in using my knowledge, I can be of help.

There are a lot of smart people who don't use their knowledge to help others, so I think it's special. Or at least admirable.

[His expression almost lights up for a brief moment, though whether it continues or not is hard to say as he immediately moves to pull his messenger bag up closer to him to dig through it.]

I have everything in here, let me... Ah--

[And he pulls out a rather fancy looking book, one that looks, at least on the outside, like it was designed in the style of some sort of magical tome.

(It's probably the second heaviest book in his bag...)]

Thanks. It's just like the tome I remember using, back home. ...Well, on the outside, at least. I wanted something at least a little bit familiar, so...

[he's trying to take your advice sometimes...?]

Mm. It's a small comfort, but even this much... It does help, sometimes.

[In any case, he opens the book, flipping through until he comes to more recent pages, covered in his own handwriting - a neat, elegant script that looks like he was specifically taught at one point - as well as some attempts at copying some of those stick and circle diagrams for molecules that they teach in high school.

Apparently he was reading about cyanide (it's, it's fine), which veered toward how it works on a chemical level, since the first diagram is somewhat crude and obviously copied down by someone who's doing his best but not 100% sure what he's looking at. The notes then take a sharp nosedive into what that diagram even means, and there's a page or two of just excited notes about how molecules are made of atoms and more simple molecular structure diagrams that are clearly labeled.]

It’s funny — this is the kind of thing that I don’t think excited me much in school. But I was required to learn it. Seeing you get excited about it sort of makes me want to take a step back and re-evaluate my attitude... or something like that.
