FiN to W... Wait no winning here

Who: FiN & Visitors
Where: FiN Dorm
When: Post-Game, Night 377

[ FiNs being brought back to the dorms will find that the sleepover room has been set up for maximum comfort, with mounds of pillows, sheep plushes, and blankets scattered everywhere and picnic baskets with snacks and drinks set up. There are also plastic tarps that go from the entrance to the bathrooms, along with everyone's private rooms, and bathroom sets put out that include sheep pajamas for those inclined to sulk in sheep. ]

[ Home sweet prepared-for-the-worst home. ]

Oh, I meant with the preparations, but the game tower did look like a slaughterhouse, yes. What even happened?

[Oh... Preparations, yes. They're very soothing, actually.]

Sho-senpai is really sweet.

[But uh, game.]

It was a game where we had to pick from a list of sins to punish. The more we punish, the more points we get. Six teams with most points win. If you punish at least seven sins, your own punishment for the round lessens.

Most units did not choose more than seven on the first round, mostly following their own sense of what is or isn't worthy of punishment. Except Baritones, who chose to punish every single one, and did so for each round. Naturally, people panicked at seeing that, realizing that if anyone else were to do the same their unit would be doomed to lose. And no one knew who would or wouldn't follow Baritones' example... So in the end everyone did.

[He scoffs, clearly displeased.]

They raised the ante way too high without any need for it. It's... stupid and thoughtless, and worst of all it just gave the producers what they wanted.

There's always someone who has to go above and beyond. Back in my day there was always a justification for it, always some kind of 'I was right, because of this and that', but any unit who starts the race off at a sprint like that is a level of brazen we never even had...

It's not always like that, I don't think. But this game seemed easy enough to win without resorting to such measures. They could have saved that mad dash for the last round to secure a place ahead, not make it clear from the start that they do not care for the rest of us in the slightest.

[He makes a face.]

The member of theirs that I had most expected that from has left, too, so this was even more of a surprise.

For a long time, I thought the nature of people was to be inherently selfish, heartless, and cruel. This place does a wonderful job of confirming that kind of bias.

[...]

I don't... think people are. But it is very easy for them to slip into that selfishness and cruelty. In a place like this, where we are pushed to our limits... It's easy to forget about all pain other than our own. Or instead learn to ignore it completely for the sake of others. And neither is... how it should be.

No, both of those are unhealthy. This is an unhealthy place, though.

Yes. But I want to hope that... well. We can help each other stay as human as we can. We're not trapped here forever.

[...okay something about that is really funny? He laughs, then winces, putting a hand to his face. Oh right still missing a fuckin eye.]

I need to buy a replacement.

[personal profile] metafaliure 2021-06-27 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, can I show you some blueprints? I know I've been offering replacement parts as an idea to everyone who got mangled, but I'd actually already started designing eyes, just in case I break my glasses.

[ .......... :0 ]

...You would replace your eyes if you broke your glasses?
metafaliure: (17)

[personal profile] metafaliure 2021-06-27 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
It would just make everything much easier, that's all.

[personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-27 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well... I would agree that mechanical eyes can likely do a lot more than regular eyes. But a surgery to remove them first would probably be the first obstacle, and after that - what about connecting the nerves? General compatibility with the rest of the skin? Reaction to changes in blood pressure?
metafaliure: (46)

[personal profile] metafaliure 2021-06-27 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Right, that's why this is the perfect opportunity! We don't need to do surgery to remove your eye, it's already gone.

[....... pats own cheek thoughtfully]

I did wonder for a time about having something with me that would not depend on unit abilities to be useful during games.

With an eye, there are some pretty basic functions I was thinking of adding. A zoom in and out, a blacklight filter, a recording function, a photography function...

[personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-27 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Heat detection, perhaps?
metafaliure: (22)

[personal profile] metafaliure 2021-06-27 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
That's a good one. It could help you see hidden things in dark places, and would be less likely to overheat than a flashlight.
weenwoon: (contemplating the cheased burger)

[personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-27 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Could you add a flashlight? Oh... if there's video and picture recording, where is the resultant data stored?
metafaliure: (61)

[personal profile] metafaliure 2021-06-27 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
I could add a small one, but it wouldn't be very effective at long range. And I think I could rig up a way to get it to send to your phone.
weenwoon: you brought this upon yourself (gossip buddy)

[personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-27 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
What if I don't have my phone on me at the time? Some kind of internal storage is needed, then... But not the kind that can be ejected and inserted again, it would likely complicate handling the eye too much.

For the flashlight, even short range would be good. And it's a handy way to fend off attackers if someone comes too close! I am not much of a fighter, so I prefer to incapacitate or flee.
metafaliure: (17)

[personal profile] metafaliure 2021-06-27 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure a flashlight could fend off attackers... it being bright enough to do that could seriously damage your other eye.
weenwoon: haki is a cropforce (takes a deep breath)

[personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-27 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
But supposing someone tackled me, couldn't I flash the light in their eyes and throw them off?
metafaliure: (31)

[personal profile] metafaliure 2021-06-27 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe... but it's not a flashbang, you know. I could make one that does that, but it wouldn't be able to do it more than once, and usually you don't want a consumable eye...
