Well, I wasn't officially the detective at the time.

Obviously, since they weren't actually dead, it wasn't a proper mystery in the first place, either.

There can be fake bodies, but there must be a real one for it to be a real mystery. Van Dine's 7th. There can be no crime without a corpse.

It's one of Van Dine's rules of mysteries. There's a library here, have you really not even read that much?

The only mystery there is why I would do such a thing, and I doubt interpretation is going to be enough to provide that answer.

It's true that you're unlikely to be able to solve it based on one scene. But it would certainly give you more hints than you'd have otherwise.

Your motive...? I intend to. Perhaps not based on a singular scene, but I won't let that remain unsolved.

I was only personally a participant in two. And there were extenuating circumstances that means my attention wasn't focused where it should have been.

Such a supposedly great detective, yet you have to resort to petty excuses? My.

[Grinds her teeth as her mouth turns into a grimace.]

I won't deny it was a pathetic showing. Once I had time to think properly, many things became a lot clearer. But that just means I'm more dedicated to redeeming myself now. I'll solve every part of the mystery, even if it means tearing apart every memory you get.
