It is usually that instantly thing. Vikings try really hard to avoid dying from wounds after a battle. No one wants to pass up on Valhalla, so you need to die in battle or not at all.
Leads to a lot of amputations to avoid dying from infection, but if we had better medicine, there could at least be less of that. Not that its always avoidable, but not every limb gets half chomped off by a dragon.
