There's Faust, about a man who sells his soul to a demon. Salome, which is famous for the titular character receiving the head of her would-be lover on a platter. Or maybe Bluebeard's Castle, which is difficult to describe, a new wife persuades her husband to reveal all his secrets, suspecting something horrific.
