From talking to him, it seems like he's not really a "strategy" sort of person. He expects everyone to approach things as straightforwardly as he does, and for actions to have straightforward consequences. I mean, he just basically announced that he has trouble with the gray area between "willing to kill anyone at any time" and "wants to protect people as much as possible." So yeah, he probably doesn't understand why you play the way you do at all.
It does seem like his motivations are in the right place, though. And I explained to him that unilaterally killing people for you and sparking retaliation would probably hurt the unit more than help it, and he seemed to take that earnestly under consideration, so...
